Sarah & Paul

England, March 2025

What did you like most about Sri Lanka?

The wildlife, the scenery, the food. Paul managed to clock off 80 fully identified birds – a great achievement.

What did you like least about Sri Lanka?

Nothing – though we deliberately didn’t go to the very touristy areas.

What is your opinion of your accommodation in Sri Lanka?

We stayed in seven very different places and loved them all – except for Boulder Garden [Sinharaja]. It was an amazing construction, but I found it rather oppressive. Also, although superficially clean it felt grubby round the edges. After saying that – it was an interesting experience – with a rather strange manager. [Boulder Garden is a little avant garde, I agree, but I still like its otherworldly design and environs. However, there is no excuse for being unkempt and I am sorry they didn’t seem to be looking after the housekeeping very well. We will feedback your comments to the management.]

Galkadawala Forest Lodge [Habarana], Gal Oya Lodge [Gal Oya], Amba Estate [Ella], Mailagama Cinnamon Residence [Kataragama], Big Game Camp (we got upgraded to Mahoora Tented Camp) [Udawalawe] and Appa [Apa] Villa [Thalpe] were all just we wanted. Interesting, beautiful, and/or sustainable.

What is your opinion of your chauffeur guide in Sri Lanka?

Anura was great. Knew so much about birds and would look out for them even when we weren’t on an official safari drive. A good safe driver and helped us explore food and fruit from the road side stalls. We still had time to have some independent adventures, but knowing that he would be there per the itinerary was great for we older travellers!

He had to leave us on our 13th day, but Jay and his brother, who were his replacement for our last few days were also great.

What is your opinion of your flights to and from Sri Lanka?

Etihad [Airways] via Abu Dhabi. All fine. [London Heathrow - Economy Class]

Any other comments?

This was a great holiday – and it is up there amongst the best we’ve had.
