What did you like most about Sri Lanka?

Scenery, wildlife, food and people!

What did you like least about Sri Lanka?

Found the beach resorts crowded with lots of traffic and didn’t feel as authentic as other areas. Almost felt as if we were in a Greek resort.

What is your opinion of your accommodation in Sri Lanka?

It varied from excellent to OK.

98 Acres [Resort, Ella] was amazing and we wished we had stayed longer.

Kalu’s Hideaway [Uda Walawe] was also an excellent choice.

We had no problem with the simpler accommodation in the more remote parts such as Sinharaja [Rest, Deniyaya] and enjoyed our time there. We enjoyed the tasty home cooking there as well.

The food at the hotel in Mirissa [Paradise Beach Club] was disappointing although the room and the swimming pool were good.

Food at The [EKHO] Safari [Hotel, Tissamaharama] was also very average.

What is your opinion of your chauffeur guide in Sri Lanka?

Anura was excellent company and a good ambassador for Sri Lanka. He looked after us very well - providing fresh roti for breakfast on our early starts and giving us a taste of the real Sri Lanka. His enthusiasm for the wildlife was refreshing.

As we are enthusiastic about wildlife, we were given lots of time on the jeep safaris, and they were willing to go out of their way to accommodate our needs.

What is your opinion of your flights to and from Sri Lanka?

Emirates suits us as we do not want to travel to London. The flights to and from Dubai were not full, which improved the experience. [Economy Class – Birmingham]

Only downside was that on three of the four flights they had run out of an alternative choice of food. Can take curry at any time but breakfast and on one the only choice was fish which is not good for those who may be allergic.

Any other comments?

One of the best holidays we have ever had. We thought we had bitten off more than we could chew with the run of early starts at the beginning of the holiday but found once we were out and in the jeep and fresh air our tiredness fell away.

We couldn’t believe how close we got to the birds in the jeep and came away with some amazing photos. Bundala was a great experience for birding, with fewer jeeps. I took some video of a pair of sandpipers performing a mating ritual and even the guide seemed interested in what we were seeing. The river trip from Galle at the end was also a real treat, with some good birding, and meant that the holiday didn’t end on a low point.

We loved Galle - it was so atmospheric and it was great to be there in the evening, when the crowds had left.
