England, January 2014
We have now returned from our holiday in Sri Lanka and just wanted to give you some feedback. We had a really good time, Oscar our driver [guide] was excellent, a very careful driver and charming man (though we both found it a bit uncomfortable having someone at our beck and call, on the other hand neither of us would have liked to drive ourselves there). Most of the places we stayed in were exactly right for us, the right amount of informality and level of comfort, and delicious food, the only one we really struggled with was Buckingham Place [Tangalle]. For us it was the wrong kind of place, far too luxurious, a bit like being in a gilded cage, and it wasn’t helped by the fact that for the first night we were the only people there and so were heavily outnumbered by staff. We would have been much happier in a more downmarket place on a beach that we could swim in the sea. We could see from TripAdvisor that everyone else who stayed there thought it was fantastic, and it was, but not our style at all. On the plus side our daughter Connie made contact with the Turtle volunteers and has arranged to be a volunteer for a couple of weeks at the beginning of February, and if we hadn’t been at Buckingham Place that wouldn’t have happened.
Thank you for organising the trip for us, it was a memorable holiday, the highlights being the trip to the Kalametiya bird sanctuary [Tangalle] and to Ritigala forest temple [Habarana] and eating hoppers and eggs in an army run café on the side of the road.
