What did you like most about Sri Lanka?
Ellerton, the bungalow we stayed in outside Kandy
The train ride to Ella [from Nanu Oya]
The climb up Little Adam’s Peak [Ella]
The Buddhist statue in Buduruwagala (which was not on the itinerary, but was a magical place)
What did you like least about Sri Lanka?
What is your opinion of your accommodation in Sri Lanka?
The quality of the accommodation was generally very high. But for us the best was Ellerton, which has a lovely atmosphere (redolent of colonial times) and spectacular views across the mountains. The hotel has recently changed hands and is now owned by a charming Swiss/Sri Lankan couple, whose hospitality is outstanding.
The pool at Buckingham Place [Tangalle] was beautiful, as was the beach.
What is your opinion of your chauffeur guide in Sri Lanka?
Nihal was an excellent guide. He had good English, was efficient and friendly. He had a good knowledge of the places we visited and took the time to explain the local scene, giving us the historical/cultural context. He was punctual and courteous. For us his encyclopaedic knowledge of birds was also a real bonus. He is an ideal guide for anyone interested in bird-watching.
What is your opinion of your flights to and from Sri Lanka?
Comfortable. [Malaysian Airlines & SriLankan Airlines – Economy Class]
Any other comments?
We enjoyed our first trip to Sri Lanka. The balance was broadly right. But, with hindsight, we would have spent one day more in Kandy or Tangalle and one day less at Ella.
We loved the Buddha statues at Buduruwagala and would recommend this as a place to stop en route from Ella to the South coast. The Buddhist temple in Kandy was interesting, but very crowded. It might also be worth adding another couple of less busy Buddhist sites.
We also enjoyed a cooking course in Ella. Perhaps you should consider offering this to your guests.
