What did you like most about Sri Lanka?
The food… amazing.
The people… surely the friendliest people in the world.
The scenery… so diverse, like a world within a country.
What did you like least about Sri Lanka?
Yep, as I knew it would be, the leeches, truly awful creatures.
What is your opinion of your accommodation in Sri Lanka?
A great mix of lodges, homestays, hotels and guest houses, each unique in their own right.
Dolphin Beach Resort [Kalpitiya] - Posh tents on the beach, just what we needed after a long flight. Tents, food and service fabulous, and the whole place to ourselves which was an added bonus.
Wilpattu Tree House [Hotel, Wilpattu] - A great location right next to the park. Almost no need to go on safari, the birds to numerous to mention just flew into the tree canopy on our balcony.
Galkadawala Forest Lodge [Habarana] - Very unique eco Lodge open to the elements, expect to get up close and personal with the monkeys, fabulous food here too.
Hanthana House, Kandy - very comfortable and welcoming home stay outside of Kandy, so nice to meet Pathi and his wife.
Moksha Kitulgala [Kitulgala] - Beautiful setting with a lovely pool to chill off in. Perhaps a little slow service and a bit disorganised.
Clove Tree Cottage, Ella - situated high up in the tea plantation, very welcoming staff, simple accommodation with the most amazing and copious amounts of food. Unfortunately copious amounts of leeches too.
Mailagama Cinnamon Residence [Kataragama] - Small guesthouse with very friendly owner and manager, best egg hoppers.
Buckingham Place, Tangalle - Absolutely fabulous hotel set on a picture perfect beach. Faultless.
Fort Bliss, Galle - excellent location within the ramparts with good breakfast, but sadly not a good experience for us here. The tallest of the two chaps running this establishment was very pleasant, but the smaller man seemed quite grumpy and we felt very uncomfortable when we had to spend time with him.
Villa Hundira, Negombo - Lovely villa with many nooks and crannies to spend a quiet time, wished we had an extra day here. Very impressed with the Thimble project supporting young women.
What is your opinion of your chauffeur guide in Sri Lanka?
Kapila made the trip for us, and was happy to tweak the itinerary if needed. We always looked forward to our transfer days as we knew we'd have a mini safari along the way, he could spot and identify birds before we could even see them. Very knowledgeable on birds, wildlife, religion and culture and generally all things Sri Lankan. We were very pleased to be paired with Kapila, and we shared the same sense of fun and humour.
What is your opinion of your flights to and from Sri Lanka?
Etihad [Airways] via Abu Dhabi. Flight times good, a little tight on transfer times but just about do able. [Economy Class - London Heathrow]
Any other comments?
Thanks so much John for helping me to plan this trip it was perfect for us, just the right amount of activities and down time. Despite the leeches being a nuisance we loved the interaction with all the wildlife, we even had a peacock in our room at Buckingham Place, and a toad managed to hitchhike a lift in my walking boots and very nearly made it back to the UK with us. Am already recommending Sri Lanka and Tikalanka to friends and family.
