What did you like most about Sri Lanka?
Wonderful wildlife and scenery.
What did you like least about Sri Lanka?
There’s so much to like – can’t think of anything relevant.
What is your opinion of your accommodation in Sri Lanka?
Good/excellent apart from [The] Safari hotel at Tissa [Tissamaharama] where we got food poisoning. It was a beautiful hotel however it was the only time in the past ten years that I’ve had severe food poisoning. It wasn’t so much the food poisoning but the way in which the situation was handled by staff that seemed odd to me.
We did advise reception, however I think it was glossed over. It was very hard to order room service when we were ill (I tried once on the phone, once face to face with service staff and finally the service staff advised he would have to speak to his manager to get tea, water and toast delivered to the room as it was wasn’t on the menu). I explained around 5 times how ill we were and needed something very plain to recover. I took a lot longer than it should have.
I also think reception prevented our chauffeur guide from contacting us as there were no calls to our room when we were ill and I know he tried, however it certainly wasn’t a phone issue as the phone worked fine when contacting reception.
All the other hotels were great and the staff and rooms great. I think the norm is that our hotels were great and staff too, just this one exception. Particularly enjoyed Kalu’s Hideaway [Uda Walawe] – great eco place and lovely staff!
What is your opinion of your chauffeur guide in Sri Lanka?
Fabulous, Kapila is a very caring guy with a very keen eye for spotting wildlife and was very patient as we wanted to take plenty of photos.
What is your opinion of your flights to and from Sri Lanka?
Flights from Edinburgh to Sri Lanka was great [Qatar Airways – Economy Class], nice to avoid London as it adds on hours.
Flights back were a bit of a worry as there seemed like there was going to be a 5 hour wait at the airport, however we asked Kapila to organize some hours at an airport hotel so we could rest and that was great – a good optional extra worth pointing out as it is worth it when you have a long journey ahead.
Also we had some hours in Doha and the lounge was a good place to rest. The first leg of the flight had a problem with comms so was delayed until it got fixed but these things happen.
Any other comments?
It was a brilliant holiday – so much to see and the guides great – we saw a lot more than we ever hoped to. Thanks!
