What did you like most about Sri Lanka?
The people, the weather, the scenery, the food, the wildlife, historical sites & temples. Loved the train journey from Nanu Oya to Ella. Basically everything.
What did you like least about Sri Lanka?
Nothing.
What is your opinion of your accommodation in Sri Lanka?
Lake Lodge Kandalama [Dambulla]: we loved this hotel. Peaceful, huge room, delicious food, complimentary 5pm cocktail, lovely pool & amazing staff. Quite isolated (which we loved).
OZO Kandy: upgraded to a suite, fantastic views, quiet, rooftop bar & pool, nearby restaurants. Modern & corporate but we wanted to be within walking distance of the city centre.
EKHO Ella: first room quite noisy as near the road, asked to change room, request dealt with professionally. Walking distance of bars, restaurants, shops. Amazing views but no pool.
Coco Bay Unawatuna: huge beach facing room, quiet (although just of busy road), good restaurant able to eat virtually on the beach, easy access to Galle. Few options within walking distance for eating.
The Tamarind Tree [Hotel, Airport]: ideal for final night before early flight. Two-bedroom bungalow, lovely pool, adequate restaurant. Only gripe was A/C not very effective. Was doubtful given some Tripadvisor reviews but it was fine.
What is your opinion of your chauffeur guide in Sri Lanka?
Really impressed with Kapila. His knowledge of Buddhism & the history of Sri Lanka was exceptional. His ability to spot & name birds, other wildlife, trees and flowers was fantastic. In conjunction with us he arranged a fantastic itinerary and we did things we might not have otherwise done e.g. a massage. He introduced us to the food of Sri Lanka and took us to the type of eating establishments we enjoy. Patient, able to read our mood, non-judgmental, easy to spend time with.
What is your opinion of your flights to and from Sri Lanka?
We flew with Emirates from Stansted to Colombo via Dubai. Our return flight from Colombo to Dubai was delayed & with only 40 minutes until our connection we were escorted through Dubai airport by a member of Emirates staff at a rate of knots. Impressively our luggage still made it to Stansted.
Any other comments?
We had a fabulous trip & absolutely loved Sri Lanka. Everything went to plan, including running for a train that wasn’t ours! I’ll recommend Tikalanka to all my friends.
