The Pekoe Trail in Sri Lanka has rightly entered the Pantheon of the world’s greatest hiking trails since its launch in late 2023. Winding its way through the spectacular Hill Country, the 300 km-long, 22-stage hiking trail has won many accolades including TIME magazine’s ‘World’s Greatest Places’ list for 2025. Sri Lanka has also been revealed to be the world’s most family-friendly country in a recent report, and Condé Nast Traveler included Sri Lanka on its latest list of the 40 most beautiful countries in the world. So why not visit?

Meticulously developed over a decade by the sustainability consultant and Sri Lanka resident Miguel Cunat, The Pekoe Trail is a long-distance walking trail snaking through the enchanting Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, still regarded as one of Asia’s best-kept secrets, and featured on the BBC as a ‘hike for everyone’. Divided into 22 stages, this extraordinary 300-km trail takes you on a captivating journey through South Asia’s most breathtaking mountain landscapes, lush tea plantations, and diverse ecosystems. Along the way, you’ll encounter vibrant local communities, each offering a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s rich traditions, warm hospitality, and unique cultural heritage, making the experience as meaningful as it is adventurous. Widely celebrated as one of the world’s top hiking experiences, The Pekoe Trail combines natural beauty, cultural immersion, and unparalleled adventure, setting a new standard for trekking and redefining Sri Lanka as a must-visit destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

It’s no surprise that Sri Lanka ranked as the most family-friendly country in 2025 with its warm welcoming nature, focus on outdoor activities and family-friendly hotels, in fact Condé Nast Traveler named Sri Lanka as one of its favourite places to go for a multi-generational holiday earlier this year. The country is home to some incredible wildlife, from leopards and elephants in many of the national parks to colourful and exotic birds spotted at the roadside, plus there is a fascinating history, rich culture, gorgeous sandy and sun-soaked beaches, and delicious food.
