TikaWeeks #05/2024: Sri Lanka update
Posted by John on 31st January 2024
Apologies for the lack of updates over the past couple of months. Sri Lanka has had a dramatic turnaround in tourism since November and suddenly everyone wants to visit the Resplendent Isle. It has become particularly busy for us since the New Year for immediate holidays as well as ones well into 2025, so the future looks bright. After four long and very difficult years it looks like we’re back with a vengeance!
If you do want to visit this year then I would highly recommend getting in touch with us as soon as possible since availability from now until the Easter holidays is fast running out. School summer holidays are also getting booked up. If possible, I would suggest travelling in May, June or September to get really good deals on accommodation and enjoy the island at a quieter time, which is always better in my humble opinion.
May, June and September are wonderful months to explore lesser known locations in Sri Lanka such as Mannar Island, Jaffna in the far north, the Knuckles Mountains, the east coast beaches, and Gal Oya and Kumana National Parks. Favourites such as Yala NP are also good at this time of year, although Block 1 of Yala NP is closed from 01 September for up to two months annually as a respite for the animals at the end of the dry season – Blocks 3, 4 & 5 are still open so it is still worth a visit. This period is better weather-wise in the north and east of the country, although visiting parts of the Hill Country in the rain shadow of the southwest monsoon is also possible and recommended.
New Tika Tasters (sample itineraries) in the making are a dedicated Geoffrey Bawa tour, mostly arranged around visits to or stays in his most iconic buildings but with other architectural highlights thrown in, and a specialist birdwatching holiday. We are also expanding our offering of villas on the island with an extra tab on the accommodation section of our website devoted to villa stays. Watch this space!
