Despite Sri Lanka’s crushing defeat at the hands of arch rivals India in front of a capacity home crowd in last month’s Asia Cup final, there were still plenty of smiling faces, dancing in the aisles and party music resounding around Colombo’s R. Premadasa cricket stadium. Even at the height of the island’s civil war and during the recent political and economic chaos, cricket has been a unifying force, a soothing balm at the time of crisis.

The forthcoming cricket Test series between Sri Lanka and England has been postponed and the England players are to return home due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. In another COVID-19 development today, the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka has banned all travel from France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden and Austria to Sri Lanka from 15 to 29 March 2020. This is on top of the ban already in place for travel from Italy, South Korea and Iran.

Nearly at the end of the year and at least the days are getting longer now that we are past the Winter Solstice – well, infinitesimally anyway! The relaxing of travel restrictions to Sri Lanka from European countries continues with the Netherlands. We again hope that the UK won’t be far behind. On another positive note, Sri Lanka has introduced an Environment Commemoration Week this year to celebrate World Environment Day on 05 June with various programmes aimed at addressing the principal environmental issues faced by the island nation.

It has been a very busy and eventful period for us since the Destinations holiday and travel show last month, with this being our peak holiday and booking season, so apologies for the radio silence. Firstly, we would like to thank everyone who visited us at Destinations, both potential customers and old friends! Things are moving fast in Sri Lanka, with many new hotels being developed and infrastructure improved, so this Sri Lanka update will try to cover what has been happening on the island over the past few months and with us as a company.

Barmy army, barmy army, barmy army… Yes, England’s cricket team is off to play Sri Lanka in the Pearl of the Indian Ocean later this year and the tour dates are finally confirmed.
